Overview

Incision & drainage (I+D) is a medical procedure used to treat infected cysts, abscesses, or boils. It involves making a small cut at the infection site to allow accumulated fluid to escape. This intervention not only provides immediate relief from pain and pressure but also helps prevent the spread of infection to surrounding tissues. Performed with local anesthesia, I+D ensures minimal discomfort and promotes faster healing. At Seaside Dermatology, our skilled team ensures precise and effective treatment for optimal recovery.

Concerns Treated:

  • Infected cysts that cause discomfort
  • Abscesses with accumulated pus
  • Boils resulting in localized pain
  • Infected sebaceous glands needing relief
  • Painful nodules with significant swelling

Why It’s Done

Incision & drainage (I+D) is performed to address infections in cysts, abscesses, or boils that are causing significant discomfort, swelling, or pain. These infections can lead to complications if left untreated, such as spreading to nearby tissues or causing systemic issues. By making a small incision and allowing the accumulated fluid to drain, I+D effectively reduces pressure, alleviates pain, and prevents further infection. This procedure not only provides immediate relief but also supports faster healing and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Benefits:

  • Provides immediate relief from pain and pressure
  • Reduces the risk of infection spreading to surrounding tissues
  • Promotes faster healing by draining accumulated fluid
  • Minimizes the need for more invasive surgical procedures
  • Offers a quick recovery with minimal downtime
  • Performed under local anesthesia, ensuring comfort

Your Experience

Before

Before your procedure, you will undergo a consultation with your provider to discuss the treatment and address any concerns you may have. To ensure your comfort, the affected area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. This helps to minimize pain and discomfort during the procedure. You may be given specific instructions on how to prepare, such as avoiding certain medications or fasting if necessary.

During

During the procedure, your provider will make a small incision at the site of the infection, such as an infected cyst or abscess. The incision allows the accumulated fluid or pus to drain out. Your provider will carefully remove any debris and may pack the cavity with gauze to facilitate healing. The procedure is typically quick, and you will be monitored to ensure the area is adequately drained and cleaned.

After

After the procedure, a bandage will be applied to the site. You should keep this bandage on for the first 24 hours. Following this period, remove and clean the area with gentle soap and water 1-2 times a day and then apply antibiotic ointment before re-bandaging. To manage pain and swelling, elevate the area and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. If you notice any worsening symptoms or lack of improvement, contact your provider for further evaluation.
